The Syrian Conflict
The Syrian Conflict has already killed over 200,000 thousand lives since the start of the civil war, This had all began over the anti-government protests against the Assad regime. It soon began to escalate into rioting and eventually became a civil war. More than 11 million people have been forced out of there homes as loyalist forces battle against the Syrian rebels who are mainly made up by civilians.
The civil war started back in 2011 where pro-democracy protests erupted due to revolting slogans on school walls, security forces opened fire on demonstrators and killed several people. The unrest triggered a nationwide backlash against the current president Bashaar Al-assad. The sheer opening of gunfire on demonstrators merely hardened the people's resolve.By the end of 2011 100,000 people had taken to the streets to express there opinions.
Violence eventually escalated and the country had entered a civil war which since they have not ended. Rebels groups were formed to take on government forces, this fighting lead to a number of cities being key controlling points in the war. Furthermore it forced as many has 11 million people out of there home. In June, 2013 the UN recorded over 90,000 deaths however nearly a year later that figure had doubled leaving many to ponder if this would ever stop.
The Syrian war also saw the inclusion of the extremist group ISIS, they conquered towns and cities whilst also destroying many Syrian lives in there own abhorrent way. In the eyes of many we have deduced that ISIS was another contributor for many Syrian families being displaced. This mean't that the world especially the US was fighting a war within a War, there have been many attempts of to try and resolve the war but all have been rejected by Russia. On many occasions the Russians have refuted an abundance of proposals set by the UN due to there relationship with Syria
War crimes had been committed, Government and rebel forces have also been accused by investigators of using civilian suffering, such as blocking access to food, water and health services, as a method war. More than 6000 people were killed during bomb raids in 2014. The UN says in some instances, civilian gatherings have been deliberately targeted, constituting massacres. ISIS continued on it's merry way as it carried out mass executions in public, this is due to people transgressing and refuting there religious rites
The conflict has is now more than just a battle against President Al-assad, it has acquired sectarian overtones,pitching the country's Sunni majority against the presidents Shia Alawite. The Syrian conflict also lead to the biggest human exodus to date, as empathized before 11 million people fled to neighbouring countries. The UN and other organisations have been the front and centre of this aid mission, pledging more than 8.4 billion dollars towards the issue.
What began as violent Arab spring, then blossomed into massive proxy war, mainly due to to Iran and Russia. Iran is one of many allies to Syria, they provide weapons and soldiers whilst they supply training and aid. Russia has a major naval installation in Syria, this particularly important because of it's strategic advantage.
